Spring 2014 Commencement Participation Policy

Undergraduate and graduate students (MS candidates) who have two or fewer classes remaining to complete degree requirements after the spring 2014 term will be eligible to request participation in the spring ceremony. Undergraduates must have a 2.0 minimum GPA, and master’s students must have a 2.7 minimum GPA. Extenuating personal and family circumstances or issues related to the proximity of the student’s home to Atlanta will also be taken into consideration.

Doctoral students who are August degree candidates will be handled on a case-by-case basis depending upon when they are cleared by their major schools and the Office of Graduate Studies as having completed all of their degree requirements. Doctoral students must have a 3.0 minimum GPA to apply.

Summer 2014 graduates who do not meet these requirements will still have the option to participate in the fall commencement ceremony in December 2014.  Fall commencement ceremony information will be communicated to all summer 2014 degree candidates in July.

The form to request permission to participate in the spring Commencement ceremony will be sent via email to all summer degree candidates who applied during the new application window from January 16 to February 28.  Students who petitioned to graduate in fall 2013 or spring 2014, but who did not do so, will be invited to reapply for summer 2014 graduation, as well as file the request form to walk in the spring 2014 Commencement ceremony. The request form will also be available on the Commencement website from February 28 to March 14. The Office of the Registrar will process the request forms and communicate directly with the students.

Due to space constraints, the number of summer degree candidates who can participate will be limited. In the event that we have more applicants than available tickets, Registrar’s Office staff will review the forms and select which students are allowed to participate based on the extenuating circumstances provided on the request form.  Consultation with other offices on campus will occur as needed to ensure that all requests are given full and consistent consideration. Summer degree candidates will be notified prior to ticket distribution on March 31st whether their request will be granted.

Preliminary graduation honors will not be calculated for summer Bachelor of Science degree candidates at the spring (May) commencement ceremony.  Graduation honors for summer (August) graduates will be printed in the fall program. Summer graduates will not be listed in the spring program and are not eligible to wear honor cords.

Spring 2014 Participation Deadlines

February 18 – Registrar invites all summer 2014 applicants to submit the petition to participate in spring 2014 Commencement. The email will contain information about the GPA and two-course minimum requirements. Bachelor of Science degree candidates must have a 2.0 cumulative or better GPA. Master of Science degree candidates must have a 2.7 cumulative or better GPA. Doctoral degree candidates must have a 3.0 cumulative or better GPA.

February 28 – Deadline for new summer 2014 graduation applicants.

March 3 - March 14 – Special re-application window for re-applicants for summer 2014.

March 3 – March 14 – Request forms to participate in Spring Commencement are received and evaluated. Final decisions are sent to students via email prior to March 31. If approved, additional information regarding RSVP, regalia, ceremony information and ticket distribution will be sent.

March 31-April 11 – Ticket distribution period begins. Summer candidates are required to follow the same policies as spring candidates. Tickets will be available at the Athletics Ticket Box Office. 

Regalia Orders

Summer graduates participating in fall commencement are responsible for securing their own regalia. Bachelor's and Master's candidates may purchase from Barnes and Noble @ Georgia Tech anytime during the summer or fall semesters or order regalia through TechStuff and have regalia shipped to their residence. Summer 2014 Candidates - Important Information

Due to the discontinuation of summer commencement, students graduating in Summer 2014 are invited to participate in the Fall 2014 Commencement exercises. Fall Commencement is scheduled to take place December 12 and 13, 2014 at McCamish Pavilion.

Students who wish to participate in Fall 2014 Commencement were asked to register an email address with the Commencement Office from July 6 to July 24 to receive updated information. Students who did not register but would like to participate must contact the  Commencement Office at events@comm.gatech.edu to inquire about remaining space. 

All summer graduates wishing to participate in the Fall 2014 ceremony must submit an RSVP during fall semester to receive guest tickets and participate in the ceremony. Fall commencement will be a ticketed event.
